CROSS RIVER, N.Y. -- A Westchester, N.Y., public high school has suspended three 16-year-old girls for saying the word "vagina" during a reading from "The Vagina Monologues." John Jay High School Principal Richard Leprine said the girls were punished because they disobeyed orders not to say the word "vagina."

What a joke. If they were worried about the content, why were children invited? This principal and Bush would get along just fine. They are both morons of the highest level. I had to call the school just to ridicule them. It went to a voicemail, so I must not have been the only one. LOL.

The morals police strike again. Puritanism has gone overboard in some parts of this nation.

Whether or not the word should have been banned is immaterial. They were told beforehand not to say the word and decided to defy authority. If they wanted to read the work verbatim they needed to either work something out with the principal, or do it off school property. When you make a grownup decision like that, you face grownup consequences. Why can't children these days just follow rules? Suspension was too harsh, but these girls would be spending a few late afternoons in the study hall if I were principal.

Man, is our society becoming lame or what!!?
Whatever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me".
Has that been changed to "sticks and stones may break my bones but if you call me names or say words that make me giggle, someone is going to have to die".
America the Lame, Let the PC light shine on thee!!

Bands playing at high school events where I live must submit all lyrics prior, before getting the rights to perform. Bands have stopped playing up here.

Again, it wasn't an educators decision it was the girls' own decision. The event was an after-school event sponsored by a third party not the school.

Hmmm - kind of highlights the purpose of the Vagina Monologues in the first place ...
If the headmasters are so moronic, why does anyone wonder about the state of schools ...

I agree bad administration to let it be heard if there was any problems with the words in it. We all know there were other words that didnt make the cut, and they didnt say. A word is only a bad as you make it. PC bs is the way of life though. At one time ****** and vagina was bad words bc they were used in explaining things not known. Now they are bad bc they just should be said...immoral. The PC has come 180. The cons are using the PC subject against the libs and they dont like it. If it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, then its a pretty little bird!

How stupid can it get?
Put the carrot in front of the horse and make sure he doesn't eat it.....
Stupid on the school's part and hooray for the girls who are comfortable with that word. It is only a body part, for God's sake.....
absolutely insane.

You obviously are out of touch with high school age kids to suggest they wont understand the content?? No offense but 16 -18 year olds not only understand sex and their bodies but a good percentage of them are having sex, for better or worse, but they understand enough of the content alright.

This is one of the reasons we are among the most naive sexually of most countries. Their are plenty of other words to describe that part of the femal anatomy. This is the correct medical term. Some adults need to wake up and ask themselves is this worth punishing these girls...No! This is so ridiculous it's saddening.

I think countries that mutilate childrens genitals are a bit more sexually naive, also one's that give a woman 90 lashes for being in a car alone with a man...but I get your point, and your right it is saddening that some educators can be so uptight and puritanical.

Good for these girls!!!! Stupid rules. The 'Monologues' are fine in high school. Hell, they should be required reading. Ever read the Bible? There is some pretty offensive stuff in there, too. I wonder if these girls had said something like faggot if that would have been okay? First Amendment and all that.

"I wonder if these girls had said something like faggot if that would have been okay?"
I highly doubt it. My question is, if they had said that word instead, would you be so hot to trot in defending them? Apart from the whole "fire in a crowded theater" scenario, freedom of speech is all or nothing.

There are exceptions to the general protection of speech, however, including the Miller test for obscenity, child pornography laws and regulation of commercial speech, such as advertising. Other limitations on free speech often balance rights to free speech and other rights, such as property rights for authors and inventors (copyright), interests in fair political campaigns (Campaign finance laws), protection from imminent or potential violence against particular persons (restrictions on Hate speech or fighting words), or the use of untruths to harm others (slander). Distinctions are also often made between speech and other acts, such as flag burning, which may have symbolic significance.

"Ever read the Bible?" Don't try in in public schools in America today! You'd certainly get more than a one-day, in-school suspension. By the way will some one please explain just what an "in-school suspension" is?" Doesn't sound like anything conducive to learning. I visualize the student in a harness, hanging from the ceiling of a hallway or cafeteria. But I know that wouldn't be allowed.

Not true. You can read the Bible at any tiem that you are not otherwise engaged. The public school can neither purchase the Bible's with tax money nor set aside specific time for everyone to read the Bible. That is against the rules, but reading the Bible is completely allowed.

An in school suspension is where you are sent to classroom for the entire day. You aren't allowed to leave without a "Hall Pass" and those are only good for bathroom breaks. Even then some are supervised. Your lunch is often brought to you or you go before or after the rest of school and take it back to the room. About the only thing you're allowed to do is homework. If you don't have any of that you must sit quitely and do nothing.
I had one of these in high school. Wasn't much fun. It's a great teaching tool for those that are highly social or academic, however, for those that aren't either, it can actually turn into a habit. They'd rather be in "in school suspension" than actually in their classes.

Are you sure you know what you are saying? have you read this book? These girls were not suspended for saying VAGINA. They were suspended for being 16 years old and reading explicit accounts of women's sexual discoveries and awakenings. If no one has a problem with a 16 year old reading sexually explicit material in public, then please, have your own 16 year old daughter read from that same book in your local church, or at your local public venue and stand up with pride as she does so. But then again, most of you read just the byline of the story and already knew all of the facts. Typical...

Actually, if you read the story, they were indeed suspended for uttering the completely accurate clinical word Vagina. Given, perhaps with warning they should have been suspended for reading sexually explicit stories aloud, but I don't happen to agree with that. And the reading wasn't done in public, it was done in school under the supervision of teachers who probably knew of the restriction but encouraged the production of The Vagina Monologues anyway.

Faggot is a derogatory word used to insult a whole section of humanity. Vagina is the clinical word to describe a part of female anatomy. Saying faggot is not much different than using the "n" word (see how we know how insulting the "n" word is but haven't embraced the same concept for the "f" word). Expelling these girls for saying vagina makes about as much sense as expelling them for saying brain or heart. This principal has major issues.

Yet it's ok for a black man to say the "n" word to a fellow black man. And although I've never heard it, it's probably ok for a gay or lesbian to say the "f" word to a fellow gay or lesbian.
Kind of double standard don't you think?
My point is that within their own sect of humanity it's ok to use those words, but if you're outside that sect "thems fightin' words." If it's not ok for us to use those words, why is it ok for them to use those words?

I think everyone is missing the most important issue. I quote from the article,
Since we're comfortable saying it, we should make other people comfortable saying it.
They want to force everyone to accept what they accept. So if a person is comfortable using faggot, should they have the right to make everyone comfortable with it. What about the "N" word? Remember the flack a teacher received for using the word ******rdly which had nothing to do with race? (BTW, it's definition is "reluctant to give or spend; stingy; miserly"
I just noticed netscape bleeped that word which is a proper English word that just happens to rhyme with the "n" word. How rediculous

Amazing. I assume the way the story is written that the school approved of the girls doing the reading but that they wanted another word substituted? Like what? I think the girls should be applauded for taking a stance against the censorship of the published material and reading it the way it was written.

Jesus: this system is made in the US for US readers? (no offence meant.
Two of my words are automaticly blocked. I can't beleive it.
Aspecialy as both words are known by most people.
One has to do with a cat
the other, wel "cont" but change "o" by "u"
Or as is wel known, it doesnt matter in what order letters in a word are put, as long as the first and last letter ar exact.
Lets try with cnut and pssuy
And to finish:
Well I personaly think that "vagina" in this context does sounds better and more "proper"

The girls were told that they could not say vagina during the reading the Vagina Monologues, they did and they were punished, what did they expect. They should have substituted the word penis for vagina. I guess they could have used kitty but penis would have been funnier.>>>>>
I think the girls knew what was going to happen, and I'm proud of them. I want to thank you for that laugh.. Dang, I wish they had said 'penis.' LMAO!

Oh, save us all from idiots like you. Have you READ "The Vagina Monologues". No, huh? But it is sex crazy trash and these students are ******s because they read it. It seems to me, AboundInIdiocy, that if you HAVE a vagina you should be allowed to say the WORD vagina! Why should a body part be so reviled that even the correct word for it is taboo? This kind of censorship is just so ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as calling some young woman a "ho" because she read from a play.

If you substitute the words "public place" for "school" the issue is moot. The school was being used as a public place for students to perform in an event that was NOT sponsored by the school during non-school hours. The principal legally had no authority to decide one way or the other.

I think not my adolescent jock...you are a child trying to function among those who DO know the English language. I assure you, you are nobody to judge any literary item. Get yourself over to the kids version of netscape....you can be an idiot all you want there with nobody there who will notice you suck.
