      Whether or not the word should have been banned is immaterial. They were told beforehand not to say the word and decided to defy authority. If they wanted to read the work verbatim they needed to either work something out with the principal, or do it off school property. When you make a grownup decision like that, you face grownup consequences. Why can't children these days just follow rules? Suspension was too harsh, but these girls would be spending a few late afternoons in the study hall if I were principal.

        On the other hand, if everyone just followed all the really stupid rules and did only the things that were accepted, the world would be a boring place with no progress. Every now and then someone has to stand up and say, "this is ridiculous and I refuse to comply." I would have done the same thing. It's outrageous that a part of your anatomy should be something dirty.

          this is really silly...I mean the word "vagina" are they serious , and your right Kenoryn if people didn't once and awhile realize that the powers that be were wrong and misjudged a situation, and defied thier judgement...the civil rights movement would never have happened! Now I realize this is a far different situation but come on the word is Vagina and it was said in the context of a play...and if they were told ahead of time not to say it the principal was wrong, and the girls were right to say the play verbatim as it should be.

          You have to pick your battles. These girls decided to flaunt authority and the prinicpal was forced to lower the boom.

          Some acceptible ways to avoid this outcome this would have been:

          - Talk with the principal to find out why he opposes the use of the word in a classroom setting. Explain the context and why it's use is integral to the story.

          - Talk to your parents and have them directly call the principal to put the case forward if the principal won't take the students seriously. Librarians are also very passionate about literary accuracy, the students could have tried to get the librarian onside.

          - Write a story about it in the school newsletter to garner student support.

          - Organize a student protest.

          Instead the students took matters into their own hands and directly challenged authority without exhausting their options. That's just not how things work in the real world.

                This incident took place in the USA. There is no "school ministry" in this country. The Department of Education does not set guidelines on acceptable classroom speech. That's usually up to the local school board. There was no established rule against saying vagina in the classroom. As others have pointed out, it's a rule the principal made up on the spur of the moment. It was also a completely absurd rule for a high school educator in this country to make, thus my statement.

                Teaching students to defy arbitrary, abusive and immoral authority is a valid educational goal. Something that was pretty well established at Nuremberg. Granted, he didn't tell them to kill all their Capricorn classmates, but it was an irrational abuse of power, nonetheless.

                Fortunately, you know nothing about my professional or academic background, so I will forgive your ignorance. Suffice it to say that you are completely wrong.

                  There is nothing in the article that says anything about the principal 'making it up on the spot'.

                  Teaching students to defy arbitrary rules is good, but doing so in the right context is key.

                  What if you think it's okay to smoke in the school? Do you walk into the principal's office, light up a cig and blow smoke in his face? If not, who is the arbiter of what is 'immoral authority'? Instead, you could lobby a congressman, write influential pieces to the local media or simply vote for politicians who would let you smoke in the school. From what I read here, you sound like the type that would get tossed from a baseball game the first time an ump made a call against you. Suck it up and move on. I think a more plausible explanation is that these kids were exploring their boundaries, seeing if they could get away with saying what was deemed a 'bad word'.

                  Interesting that you ended your rant against a value judgement with a value judgement. People never learn from themselves.

                    There are other, better, more in-depth articles on this incident out there. My data is not based solely upon what I found here. They were told to not say vagina, it was not a standing school or district rule.

                    Vagina was not deemed a bad word, the principal was afraid of offending people with what is in fact a correct medical term. You say right context, well this is the right context. I have taught in schools, both junior high and elementary, where it is ok for adults to smoke. I disagree with that policy because of the example it sets for the kids, but I certainly didn't blow smoke in my boss's face to make a point.

                    Don't make any assumptions about my "type" and I won't make any about yours. I wouldn't argue the ump's call, because it's just a game that means nothing.

                    I did not make a value judgment when I said you were completely wrong. To rephrase, you do not know my professional and academic background. Your assumptions regarding such are in complete factual error.

                      You've rationalized the principal's position here, but still have not described a means to define 'immoral authority'. The principal's intention was to avoid the use of the word vagina to avoid offending some people's sensibilities. That shows some level of morality, even if you personally believe it to be misguided. I think it's misguided as well, but it's not for me to say as I don't live in the community and I wouldn't thrust my beliefs onto them. So I put to you again, how do you define what leadership is immoral?

                      You also do not define what is a reasonable context in which to voice your displeasure. Ask yourself, was a direct disobeying of the principal's orders really the best they could have done? These students could have just told the principal that they didn't agree to his terms and they would do the reading at non school-sponsored location where they _could_ use the word, if it meant so much to them.

                        I didn't say the principal was an immoral authority, I said teaching opposition to immoral authority is a valid goal. I should have used "or" rather than "and," that was my mistake. That said, everyone will have their own definition of immoral. I think the principal acted arbitrarily, and as you said, misguided. If people did not want to hear a passage from TVM, they did not need to attend that portion of the program. Prior restraint robs from the marketplace of ideas, which I believe is wrong.

                        The students have claimed they did not agree to the principal's order, so it's all conjecture as to what they actually agreed.

                        They did intentionally disobey, knowing the consequences, so technically they are guilty of insubordination. It's the original order that I believe is inherently flawed, not the civil disobedience of said order. And perhaps this is where we agree to disagree :)

                    I agree that there are bad teachers, and administrators, and school board members, and superintendents, etc., etc.

                    Sadly, some kids just don't have all that much potential to begin with. But it's families that have the biggest impact on a child's quality of education, for better or worse. Whether a child does well or poorly academically, it is usually the family that deserves the most credit...or blame!

            The word wasn't used "in a classroom setting." It was read at an event sponsored by a literary magazine. It took place on school grounds which believe it or not are public property.

            And sometimes there just isn't that much time to have people back you up. Getting a meeting with the principal can take up to 3 days in some schools and then just to be told it's something the Superintendent or School Board is responsible for. I'm all for following rules but sometimes they are inapplicable to the situation they are used.

        The point of The Vagina Monologues is not to be ashamed. It's about liberation.

        Eve Ensler is a great role model for teenage girls. I am disgusted that they would get suspended for this.

        They tell kids to love themsleves for who they are. To embrace themselves and when they do it (in a fashion that i not hurting anyone) something like this happens.

    I agree bad administration to let it be heard if there was any problems with the words in it. We all know there were other words that didnt make the cut, and they didnt say. A word is only a bad as you make it. PC bs is the way of life though. At one time ****** and vagina was bad words bc they were used in explaining things not known. Now they are bad bc they just should be said...immoral. The PC has come 180. The cons are using the PC subject against the libs and they dont like it. By the way will some one please explain just what an "in-school suspension" is?" Doesn't sound like anything conducive to learning. I visualize the student in a harness, hanging from the ceiling of a hallway or cafeteria. But I know that wouldn't be allowed.

      Not true. You can read the Bible at any tiem that you are not otherwise engaged. The public school can neither purchase the Bible's with tax money nor set aside specific time for everyone to read the Bible. That is against the rules, but reading the Bible is completely allowed.

      An in school suspension is where you are sent to classroom for the entire day. You aren't allowed to leave without a "Hall Pass" and those are only good for bathroom breaks. Even then some are supervised. Your lunch is often brought to you or you go before or after the rest of school and take it back to the room. About the only thing you're allowed to do is homework. If you don't have any of that you must sit quitely and do nothing.

      I had one of these in high school. Wasn't much fun. It's a great teaching tool for those that are highly social or academic, however, for those that aren't either, it can actually turn into a habit. They'd rather be in "in school suspension" than actually in their classes.

    Are you sure you know what you are saying? have you read this book? These girls were not suspended for saying VAGINA. They were suspended for being 16 years old and reading explicit accounts of women's sexual discoveries and awakenings. If no one has a problem with a 16 year old reading sexually explicit material in public, then please, have your own 16 year old daughter read from that same book in your local church, or at your local public venue and stand up with pride as she does so. But then again, most of you read just the byline of the story and already knew all of the facts. Typical...

      Actually, if you read the story, they were indeed suspended for uttering the completely accurate clinical word Vagina. Given, perhaps with warning they should have been suspended for reading sexually explicit stories aloud, but I don't happen to agree with that. And the reading wasn't done in public, it was done in school under the supervision of teachers who probably knew of the restriction but encouraged the production of The Vagina Monologues anyway.

        Yes, I saw the little one-paragragh explanation that states that the girls were suspended for saying the word Vagina. What it DOESN'T say is the important details that lead up to the suspension. Were the girls advised to do the reading on another subject matter? Were the girls assigned this book, or was it up to them to choose? Did they do as many teens do, and do something forbidden, simply to see what would happen?

        When a story like this is displayed, it reminds me of the Star and Enquirer magazines you see at checkout counters. They leave out simple pieces of information to sensationalize the story. i have no doubt that there are key pieces of info left out of the story as to make it sound incredible to readers with little intellect such as you.

        And to whakked, I don't know if you are aware of this, but a classroom is a public area.

    Faggot is a derogatory word used to insult a whole section of humanity. Vagina is the clinical word to describe a part of female anatomy. Saying faggot is not much different than using the "n" word (see how we know how insulting the "n" word is but haven't embraced the same concept for the "f" word). Expelling these girls for saying vagina makes about as much sense as expelling them for saying brain or heart. This principal has major issues.

          That's great, but there are people who use those words freely. I've heard it. It's that sect of humanity that needs to get over themselves. You call them a "n" and they come back and call you racist. That same person calls you a cracker and you call them out, your the racist.

          I've seen this happen. It's a sad state, yes, but I've seen it. My point was that there is a double standard within this country that needs to be eliminated. If it's not ok for one group of people to say something, then it shouldn't be ok for them either.

  The girls were told that they could not say vagina during the reading the Vagina Monologues, they did and they were punished, what did they expect. They should have substituted the word penis for vagina. I guess they could have used kitty but penis would have been funnier.

    I think I like those girls, standing up against stupid rules.

    But(t) (one or two "t"'s??), yes they might have escaped punnishment by following the lettr of the rule and by using another word:

      Jesus: this system is made in the US for US readers? (no offence meant.

      Two of my words are automaticly blocked. I can't beleive it.

      Aspecialy as both words are known by most people.

      One has to do with a cat

      the other, wel "cont" but change "o" by "u"

      Or as is wel known, it doesnt matter in what order letters in a word are put, as long as the first and last letter ar exact.

      Lets try with cnut and pssuy

      And to finish:

      Well I personaly think that "vagina" in this context does sounds better and more "proper"

  Oh, save us all from idiots like you. Have you READ "The Vagina Monologues". No, huh? But it is sex crazy trash and these students are ******s because they read it. It seems to me, AboundInIdiocy, that if you HAVE a vagina you should be allowed to say the WORD vagina! Why should a body part be so reviled that even the correct word for it is taboo? This kind of censorship is just so ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as calling some young woman a "ho" because she read from a play.

    There is nothing wrong with the word vagina. The reading of the monologues is in appropriate in a school in the first place.

      If you substitute the words "public place" for "school" the issue is moot. The school was being used as a public place for students to perform in an event that was NOT sponsored by the school during non-school hours. The principal legally had no authority to decide one way or the other.

  Have you listened to them? I found then entertaining but not arousing, and to tell the truth some made me feel a bit uncomfortable, which I guess is the point.
